What internal reactions do people, other than white, experience when a white female, early 50’s casually interacts with them in settings such as a grocery stores, restaurants, etc.. I try to make eye contact, followed by ‘hi’ and a friendly smile with everyone I encounter. Casual conversations in a grocery line or restaurant are common for me regardless of race/ethnicity. Is this at all offensive? What goes through your mind? When I made mention to an African-American waitress in a fine restaurant that she had an amazingly beautiful smile, she was gracious enough initially but then became very distant. Help me to understand.
