RebeccaMemberIn my work area, I am a supervisor. I supervise approximately 30 people throughout my shift. I have a variety of ages, but only one African-American. She is not a good worker. She evades work, takes overly long breaks, disappears without notice, and generally is hard to work with, and I’ve had to reprimand her on occasion. This is nothing new for my department, there are several who receive weekly or bi-weekly reprimands for things, and she receives no more than anything else. My dilemma is that she has a victim mentality, and considers anything resembling a reprimand as being racial. I’d really like to come out and just say ‘Look, I’m not predjudiced, I’m not a racist- I’m your supervisor, I’m supposed to reprimand you when your work habits are less than expected.’ but I suspect that would get me into trouble. Any advice on how to proceed?
