MelodyParticipantThe term ‘people of color’ definitely applies to me. My mother is white, my father black (though these, too, are labels since neither my mother’s or father’s skin tone corresponds to what’s in the Crayola box). My daughter is part Native American and is most definetely ‘of color,’ and what a lovely color she is. The term ‘people of color’ is just a way for folks to identify, either themselves or others. Although, as far as I’m concerned, it certainly lumps many, many people of many, many colors into one big pot. I am not one to be labelled, but there is the need for a label when we speak in generalities. We need a label, in any language, to be clear, or as close as we can get to clear, on what we are speaking of. ‘People of Color’ is a far better term than ‘darkies’ or ‘spics’ wouldn’t you say? Personally, I consider all people to be ‘people of color.’ For those who choose not to identify with the term, that’s fine. For those that do, that’s fine, too. (I’m more apt to be offended by the ‘other’ category box that I find on questionnaires.)Anyway, I kind of get a kick out of buying shampoo that is labelled ‘For Women of Color.’ Makes me feel kind of special to be in that big old pot. (P.S. ‘…genitalia a different color’? Gee, guess this person needs a life or something.)

BrendaParticipantBob, just a response to your comment, ‘In reality, black folk are NOT colored; they have one color, generally.’ Have you ever heard of the idea that people cannot identify physical difference in a peoples outside their own race? This is essentially the ‘all black people look alike’ theory. You are right to say that there is tremendous physical variation in ‘white people,’ but please, open your eyes to the equally stunning variation seen within other populations of the world. I understand this may be difficult for you at first, but if you don’t, you will miss out on a lot of beautiful ‘color’ in the world. And just for the record, according to the rest of the (non-human) world, we humans all look alike – scientifically speaking, we have the least genetic variation within the species than most animals on the planet – we are genetic babies in evolutionary terms.

Jamie N.MemberI am a proud person of color – a whitish pink. It is a meaningless phrase to describe humans and is more a statement on how racism still exists when a group constantly needs to re-invent its name in an effort to move forward and be accepted. Please come up with a better name or stick with black, or better still, ‘Sub-Saharan’ to me is geographically right on.
