It amazes me that there are so many people who think it’s a choice to be overweight and that a couple of hours at the gym could cure it. Personally…I have always been overweight. I was a chubby child, an obese teen and am now an obese adult. I did lose 115lbs by starving myself when I was in my late 20’s but after two children (and then left alone to raise them with no help) I slowly started gaining it back. I am heavier now than I ever have been and would love to spend 2 hours at the gym and focus on me but unfortuneately money is a huge factor…along with time. I try to walk as much as possible…but the knee, ankle and foot pain…along with back pain…it isn’t as much as I’d like. I agree that some kind of ‘program’ to get people healthy…not enable them to stay obese is in order.

I can only hope that a police department has the same standards as the military. In the military, if you become overweight, you still get paid while you take care of the problem. If you can’t, or won’t, they put you on the ‘fat boy’ program of fitness. If you can’t, or won’t, you go work for someone else. I really suspect, even in California, there would be a limit to how long an overweight cop could be on the dole.

I know what u mean. We know a woman, this lady who is trying to get on disability because she doesn’t like her job and doesn’t feel good. well, I don’t doubt that she doesn’t – she has osteoarthritis and rhemutoid arthritis, hypertension and diabetes 2 – all DIRECT RELATED to the fact that she’s at least 150lbs overweight. So instead of going on a diet and excercise program, she’s going to sit home, be fat and milk the taxpapers. And then SHE rants on about people on welfare. It’s been really hard to keep my mouth shut when she doesn, needless to dadd.

If you think being on disability is a reward-think again. Staying out of debt while on disability or social security is almost impossible. Also, being overweight is NOT a disability, so he is not getting money through disability at work. More than likely he was injured and not given the right type of occupational therapy to return to his usual lifestyle. You don’t list your age, so I’m assuming you’re either quite young and don’t know any better, or fairly old and don’t know any better. So, I’ll do my best to try and help here. How would you suggest this overweight person help himself? Going for a jog around the neighborhood? You’re not seeming too welcoming to him, and your his neighbor. Also, there are some people just do not understand how to lose weight just as there are those who don’t understand just how truthfully difficult it can be. It might do you good to examine a cop’s lifestyle to see what exactly it entails, sometimes ‘eatting healthy’ and exercising aren’t exactly attainable.

After reading the other replies I’d like to point out that like every other government program there are those ppl who try to screw the gov’t and those who have a legit complaint. Disability doesn’t pay that much so it’s not like he’s found the mother lode. I hope the gov’t is working with him to retrain him so he won’t be a burden. Obesity is a deadly disease. It’s not because we don’t know how to control ourselves. Please look it up if you don’t know that much about it. I have both obese and non obese ppl in my family, so it’s not completely a question of behavior.

I do not agree with paying overweight people disability b/c being overweight most of the time is optional. This is preety much saying to society that if you don’t want to work and you want to recieve a free check then why not gain t tremendous amount of wait and we will pay you for it with the people that want to and can work, taxes. This is too crazy.Children are across seas don’t have enought food or money to eat but we can pay people in our country to sit at home when they are too fat and get paid to get fatter and die!
