Kellie-LParticipantI was wondering why some men with hair loss grow it long on one side and comb it over the top. I know it’s probably traumatic to lose one’s hair, but do men who do this really think nobody else notices that? They look just fine without doing it.

JeffParticipantExcellent observation and question, for I’ve sardonically noted the same thing with a few fellows of the follicly-challenged. I don’t know why some would try such an obvious and ineffectual thing, since it doesn’t even fool the person doing it, and whatever “success” it offers is foiled with the first breeze. However, the why of it is understandable, and sad, even if this particular solution is silly. I started losing my hair at 19, and am a spitting image of Jean-Luc Picard now. I learned early and was able to adapt all the sooner to the lie that “Women don’t care about looks” – Women in general aren’t attracted to bald men, and that’s the sad bottom line of it. So I guess the “comb-over” is cheaper than a rug and less painful than hair transplants. So “we” do this dance because women can be just as shallow and concerned at the surface appearance as any sexist male. So in a sense, it’s easier for men to rise above their stereotypes than it is for women to live up to theirs!

Anatole-R31619ParticipantI think the word “bald” is a bit harsh for the majority of men who are losing their hair, although men who are receding would probably do better to shave off their remaining locks and go for all-over stubble. For me, a receding hairline is not a turn-off, and an all-bald haircut can be sexy and quite youthful (ignore comments about skinheads and slaphead).
So many men start losing their hair in their twenties that it really is a generalization to say that women are turned off by this feat of nature.
As for baldness, time does take its toll, but many women have an odd imperfection or two as well. I think the main problem is that while baldness has gotten a bad name and is at the top of the list for what people find unattractive, it is such a superficial trait that only shallow people would let it bother them. In that way I think you are right.
Male loss of hair is a sign of virility, though, as is smelly feet, so I think women who judge by baldness should just accept the physical differences men have and enjoy them.

BrianMemberI was (am) one of those men balding from the back of my head, and I honestly did not notice until I saw a picture of myself from the rear (I was sitting in the background). I solved the problem by shaving my head completely bald, and not only do I like the ‘new’ look, I get far more compliments from both men and women than with the old style.

PatrickParticipantIm only 18, but I know that soon I will loose my hair as did all the other male members of my family. 🙁 My dad has had a comb over as long as I can remember. A few years back my dad purchased a new bmw M roadster. Much fun, but he had to switch the direction of his comb over because he loves to drive with his window down now. My dad is a buisnessman and impressions are important in buisness. I think he looks more professional with his comb over.
