Doug BowlesParticipantWhat is it about being in a nursing home that is so negative? ShirleyAveryParticipantWouldn’t you hate to give up your home to live in one small room with a bunch of strangers for neighbors? That’s just for starters. Most people are sent to nursing homes because it is determined that they are physically and/or mentally unable to care for themselves. That’s a scary thought for anyone, isn’t it? Also, some disreputable nursing homes that are billing the government for payment are mistreating, ignoring or abusing the elderly people because they are helpless to do anything about it. Also, some old folks believe (often justifiably) that a trip to the nursing home is one step away from death. DotParticipantThat rewards nursing homes for spending as little as possible on staff and patient care. When the people caring for your loved one earn less than a fry cook at McDonald’s what motivation do they have to behave professionally? Further more most of them have no real training. There likely ARE some very good nursing homes around but the image is based on the norm, filthy places staffed by high school drop outs with borderline sociopathic personalities.
