Perspiration in itself is odorless. Only when one eats strong-smelling foods or does not properly bathe, is the odor of perspiration offensive. Clean sweat has no stench. People’s unpleasant odors do not always have the same roots! It is true that some Indians, Middle Easterners, as well as people from some other ethnic groups eat foods containing garlic and/or other strong spices and herbs. But even Mexicans, Americans and Europeans eat garlic sometimes, so the smell of garlic woould probably be recognized as such. A few Indians and whom I have met do not bathe as regularly with soap. For example, a friend of mine and I were in New Delhi, where it becomes extremely hot. We both wanted to freshen up. Unfortunately, this very educated person did not include soap in the shower, so the result was a putrid odor that lasted until the next bath with soap. This is only one occasion of many with various friends from the area. Other friends NEVER stunk, and we all had similiar diets and physical activities. If one eats very few spicy foods, and sits in a room full of people who constantly eat a lot of garlic, among which several also do not bathe properly, then of course, it is impossible to distinguish the garlic from the body odor.

As we all know India is very dirty and indians do not care about clean sanity. The first problem is certainly that most indians have low mentality and low culture and they must change it. however this would take thousands of year. i am Eurasian and i also know about other Southeast asians mentality. In respect to India, Thais as an example are much cleaner and do not smell bad. Thais are been complaining about smelly indians in Thai Hotels or on Thailand public places for a looooooonnnnnng time. My indian friends said that indian men do not take shower as part of culture and indian women do take shower but they still smell bad. So it is a mentality issue or culture issue. PS: I also eat Indian foods but i NEVER SMELL BAD! The belief of deodorant is bad in india, is a very old, ancient, primitive belief or old ways of thinking. the indians need to educate themselves. anyway thanks god, that i am europeanized than having ‘Third World Mentality’ and that i got chance to come and educate myself and revolutionize the way i think. European mentality is better and has been civilized for a long time. Otherwise follow the chinese or japanese because they are still better than southeast asians in many ways. Notice that i am half Thai and half Austrian but i am less asian for the goods only.(Too many negativity in Southeast asia and india.) 🙂

Indians smell. I’ve lived with a lot of them. They have poor hygiene and don’t understand cleanliness — they all have maids and don’t have to do anything for themselves. (I’m talking about the Indians FROM India — not the US). Do not be afraid to tell them they smell. It’s part of their culture to be confrontational and they will not take offense to it. Recommend they wear an anti-perspirant AND deoderant. Explain to them we are all basically animals and all need to do these things.

this smell is more so on men because men have more muscle mass, more thermal mass than women and generate more heat. i have noticed the same phenomenon you have-but i have some good news for you-you are probably dealing with people who are predominantly if not entirely vegetarian, who eat curries-and curries contain a spice called cumin-it’s also used in mexican cooking-it’s in the fennel family (curiously,in east indian restaurants, you are freqently offered fennel seeds after dinner the same way we offer after dinner mints-as a breath and digestion aid-fennel smells and tastes very pleasant, nothing like it’s cousin cumin by the way). cumin has a ‘fleshy’ odor and in fact is good to add that character to foods that DO NOT HAVE MEAT-so it’s mostly dietary, the male person factor is attributable to more sweat glands and more surface area (generally) and more muscle mass hence more body heat-not to worry-they bathe very well and if that is all you smell, observe that it really doesn’t get stronger with east indian gentleman-it’s consistent-which means they are not getting ranker and ickier during the day-cumin does mimic certain human odors mainly found on men-but the human-produced smell will get stronger and nastier (and this is usually non east indian gentlemen) whereas on your east indian co-workers you will see that it will remain constant-that’s due to diet, not lack of hygiene.

I work with a man from India in a closed space who smells so bad it makes me gag. I am constantly finding excuses to leave the work area and customers complain about the smell. But he is my boss so what can I do? Find another job because he doesn’t use deoderant and I don’t want to hurt his feelings?

Indians are the scum of the earth. They have been given life to, in turn, give meaning to the word ‘quantity’. They eat shit, breathe shit, and smell like shit. SCUM of the earth.

I have worked in Indian owned places and now encounter what many of us refer to as ‘Little India’ (the nearby mall). Of course the spices give off a certain oder, but the spices are so potent when they use them for cooking at home, it gets into their clothing, upolstery, hair, and carpets. It’s almost impossible to get that stench out. Adding to the ‘smell’ problem, is many don’t wear deorderant. I can understand facilities are not the norm in India, and bathing is a weekly to bi-weekly thing, but we have showers here or at least a bath tub in avery apartment and or house across the nation, and there is no excuse for it. If they won’t bath, they should at least have enough sense to wear deoderant.Someone informed me some are hesitant because there are chemicals in deoderant. My response was, they make natural deoderant and it works quite well, provided you shower a little avery now and then.

I read somewhere that because Muslims/Hindu people must not use any form of alcohol they cannot use deodorant (which usually contains alcohol). This is unconvincing however as you can easily obtain alcohol-free deodorant. The issue is an interesting one however because it is such an obvious yet sensitive phenomenon.

I agree that the diet argument is rubbish. If it was true, people from the Cajun parts of the South, parts of Texas, Koreans, Thai people, some Latin Americans, etc. would grow a reputation for similarly bad body odor. I agree that hygiene and maybe geographical customary practices are the main reasons for this persistent body odor. Perhaps, a chronic-shortage of fresh water existed where people came from — a problem that likely occurs for a majority of the world. Coming from that sort of background, you develop a pattern of behavior that doesn’t apply here in the US, but because it was instilled since childhood, the pattern is hard to break. Someone I knew in college had this issue and once he began bathing regularly, the odor dissappeared immediately. He was no longer avoided by all — which is highly noticeable within a college dorm environment.

I don’t think it has anything to go with hygiene or what they eat. I have no idea what it is. Some indians smell as soon as they leave the shower, even when they don’t follow Indian culture. I can even still smell it when they are wearing deodorant.. I don’t think all Indians smell like this. But, I don’t know any other race that smells this bad right after leaving the shower. I’d really like to know why they smell so bad. Is it genetics? And tell me a remedy!

I’m white and I have an amazingly keen sense of smell. I agree that there are certain smells notable among some people from India and Pakistan. Sometimes there is body odor involved, but often it is a strange, musty smell. I never understood it. until now. Recently we’ve started making tons of indian food in our house. Not just currys–but dishes that use a dizzying array of unpronouncable spices. Much different than what you get in a typical indian restaurant. The smells are simlar to the mustiness I’ve noted on indians. And (this part is gross) the smell of my flatus is musty, too. I think those spices are VERY aromatic! I suspect if you went to India you’d stop noticing the smell after two or thre days.

It has nothing to do with the spices or food Indians eat. The fact that several people stated this ignorant statement is comical and scary to think that so many people are ill informed. The reason why people smell is because they need to take a bath or shower using soap and water. It’s that simple. The other reason why people smell is on an individual level because of hormones and sweat glands.
