OK to ask?

I work at a magazine. If I have a photograph in front of me of someone I don’t know and am on the phone with that person, is it OK, in verifying the identity of that person, to ask if he/she is white, black or Asian (just as I might ask if their hair color is black, red or blonde to make sure I am speaking to the person at whose photo I am looking)? Or, do people feel most people might be uncomfortable with that kind of descriptive information?
