A lot of bisexuals I know (including myself) use terms like ‘fag,’ ‘half-fag,’ ‘dyke’ and ‘half-dyke’ in casual, joking terms with each other. We think of it as ‘taking the thunder’ out of the words and taking the power away from the homophobic. But do gay and lesbian people find this offensive or in poor taste? Is it OK for bisexuals to use gay slang?

I find no offense in being called ‘gay slang’ names by any of my gay or bisexual friends and have done the same myself – as long as no offense is intended and it’s done in a playful or self-mocking manner. A few weeks ago I was at the gas station filling up (I have a Pride bumper sticker) and some young punk of about 20 behind me looked at me and called me a ‘faggot’ and a ‘c**ksucker.’ I looked at him, smiled and said: ‘That’s right! I’m a faggot and I enjoy sucking c**k! I don’t have a problem with it, and if you do, I suggest you refrain from calling anyone that. You may just say it to the wrong person and end up getting the crap beat out of you!’ That totally disarmed him. He turned red as a beet and turned around and walked away.

Sure… why not? Use the language that will make the most sense to the person to whom you are talking. For me, the word ‘fag’ can never be diminished in its hateful impact… like the word ‘nigger’ it is far too potent and used to often as a weapon to ever be neutralized… I can deal with my enemies using the word and I am equipped to respond… however, I would never playfully call friends and colleagues by that name, and expect not to be called by that name.

I’d like to concur with Mike! My queer (gay/bisexual) friends and I all use ‘gay slang’ when we’re talking amongst ourselves. It’s like a sign of our intimacy and shared experiences as queer kids. And definitely, since we live in a relatively homophobic environment, it makes it easier for us to just roll our eyes at the close-minded bigots around us. That said, some gay people are more sensitive and are still offended by terms like that, so I wouldn’t recommend doing it in mixed groups. It should just be an ‘inside joke’ between friends who know each others’ boundaries.

no, my friends and i also use those terms while talking with eachother, although i will say one of the ‘out’ kids at my school got offended because he thought i was being offensive. in my opinion, though, i think it is absoutely fine.

I’ve never been called that by any of my gay/lesbian friends, but I seen no harm in it really. I remember reading Y?’s book, I Can’t Believe You Just Asked That, and one of the topics was on coloured people using words such as ‘nigga’ and ‘nigger’ when calling out to each other. It sort’ve reminds me of that.

It’s in No Poorer taste as MnM singing Rap music, Or white anglo teens speaking as if they where afro americans. Or Micheal Jackson Bleaching himself to be white. ‘ Oh wait, Phopa ; Slang is Slang, It makes Americans unique. we know our peers by the slang we speak. Tho a white person saying to a negro, ‘ Yo, My Niga ! whould seem odd if that black person was a stranger, remember to leave the Ebonics for friends and home, and when in a work environment, speak with every ounce of education you can muster in order to get that raise.
