Marilyn28270ParticipantWhy is it that white people, specifically white males, feel it is OK to blow their nose at the dinner table after eating, while others are still dining?

Mike28733ParticipantBeing a white man who sometimes blows his nose at the dinner table while others still dine,I see nothing wrong with the action if the nose is covered to prevent the spread of germs. If the sound of the nose blowing bothers you, you might want to tell the nose blower, with a polite tone of voice, to not do it because it bothers you.A lot of people might not know it’s offensive unless they’re told it’s offensive.

FrfankParticipantAlright, basically I think thats an upbringing rather than a racial question. I come from an Italian household and I was always taught that it was rude. I always excuse myself to the bathroom to blow my nose, and I hate when people do it in front of me… especially at the dinner table. Either way, its pretty innocuous and really just a question of etiquette

AmyMParticipantIf you are not leaning over someone’s food it’s no germier than breathing, and spicy foods often trigger quite a bit of nose-running. It doesn’t make sense to repeatedly go to the bathroom to blow your nose, especially if you are not sick. That said, I might not do it with people I didn’t know well, since they would be unfamiliar with my hygiene and health status. And I would certainly not blow my nose into a cloth napkin! Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato
