A professor of mine (who is an ‘African-American’ female) began our unit on West African music by pointing out the North, South, East, and West parts of the continent. She said next that North Africa (a.k.a. north of the Sahara) was settled and ruled by central Asians, and then Arabs–and thus, isn’t African/Africa. She seemed to suggest that because it’s ‘not black’ it’s not Africa. Is there any legitimacy to what she said?

No, not at all, how could there be? Then you’d have to say since America was settled mostly by white Europeans, that it’s not America it’s Europe. It’s on the African continent. It is African.
