I’m 38 years old and don’t have children. Inevitably, when I make a comment about raising or disciplining kids, one of my child-bearing friends always says something like, ‘Oh, you just don’t understand because you don’t have kids,’ or ‘Wait until you have kids and then you’ll see it differently.’ And I’m not talking about things I haven’t experienced like staying up all night with a crying baby or something. I’m talking about things like allowing kids to run helter-skelter through a supermarket or swearing at or hitting a parent who says ‘no.’ Maybe what I don’t understand about being a parent is that it seems to render some totally incapable of instilling discipline in their off-spring. Other than that, I don’t understand what it is I don’t understand about setting down rules and having kids follow them. My parents did it with me. So, why do parents get so defensive when someone without kids makes a comment about raising kids? I mean, I’m not an astronaut either, but I know I can’t breathe on the moon. Why can’t parents accept that childless people might valid ideas or opinions about kids?
