I evacuated New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and have been back in the city for about two months. One thing that has bothered me is the stores and restaurants that have re-opened for business. My sister and I walked past a store and noticed they were closing at 5 pm. It was 10 minutes before 5, but as we entered the store we were stopped at the door by a very rude employee who snapped, ‘We’re closing’ and said we had to leave. I’ve had similar experiences at restaurants as well. What I want to know is, if this city has a third of its population and people are complaining that they have to close shops and restaurants because they are not making money, why would they turn away customers willing to spend it at their establishment? Makes no sense to me, especially with so few things open here right now.
