I am not sure why other ethnicities are not in the NAACP. But, there might be some fear there because of stereotypes of African Americans or that the group is too militant. I am sure that if one wanted to become a member, all they would have to do is ask. Remember the Civil Right Era, all people were welcomed to help and legitimize the struggle.

Kim, NAACP is designed for all minorities, not just black-Americans. In fact of the 25 board members 2 are Asian-Americans and 4 are Latinos. NAACP is also aimed to advanced groups who have not fully advanced. Asians are fully advanced and successful. I know this is a stereotype but it’s true. Asians have incomes and edcuation attainment rates much higher than other minorities and also higher than that of white-Americans, I doubt they need to seek the NAACP for advancement. Maybe Asians don’t too much care to join the NAACP, because they are already highly successful.

The president of the NAACP for Miami-Dade county is a caucasian. He was voted in and continues to win for demonstrating his ability to care for people of every color. What affects one group will affect us all.

The common misconception about the NAACP is that it is only for blacks. This is not true. Every minority is welcome to join.

NAACP focus is Black American issues. The analagous group for Hispanics is the National Council of La Raza http://www.nclr.org Asians are represented by the Asian Human Rights Commision http://www.ahrchk.net/ Native Americans Native American Relief Fund http://www.narf.org/ Each group serves the interests of it’s constiuency through advocacy, lobby activities in congress and offering testimony to law makers. These groups are not about individual personal support but instead the class of people they represent. I do know some issues carry across ethnic boudries, for example getting pulled over on the highway for DWB (driving while brown) by police who target non whites. The black man does not worry that the police will assume he is an illegal alien even if he was born in this country. But the NAACP does not deal with immigration abuse issues in that example. So all the groups are accepting of anyone who wishes to join, but the focus is appropriate to their constituency. NAACP does not adequitely represent Asians or Hispanics and nor should it. But all the groups support diversity.

I think what you’re thinking of is the distinction between ‘colored people’ and ‘people of color.’ ‘Colored’ was the name given to Black Americans only during the 40’s & 50’s. (There were other, less flattering labels used for Hispanics and Asians during that time). These days, ‘people of color’ is now the politically correct term to refer to ‘non-white’ people – it’s NAACP, not NAAPC. However, I do agree with the other poster that all people can join, and in fact do – just not in large numbers.

Although the NAACP is open, lets face it, they seem to only champion the black race. I don’t see the NAACP advocating Native or Latino issues. And definitely not the Asians. There are a lot of degrading images of Native Americans in the USA that many black people support. The Redskins mascot football team is just a small example. Imagine how the NAACP would react if anyone called their team the blackskins and had a caricature of a black guy with an afro and big lips as the logo on their helmet. I think this is a good question and I wouldn’t mind seeing a response that justifys why this is so.

The NAACP was founded by Jews to exacerbate racial tensions in the US, eliminate independent black leaders, and psychologically damage white people. The Jews have founded other groups for the management of Hispanics and Asians, and thus feel no need for either to have prominent roles in that particular organization.

Racism and priority to topics. The largest (or soon to be largest) minority poluation is hispanic. If you look at most ‘national’ minority orginization they are primarly black and focused on black issue. I have a relative (hispanic) that works in the Census with US. Black groups FOUGHT against hispanic being lables race or ethnicity seperate, instead all hispanic people (according to the US) are ‘white’. By allowing hispanics into the fold and given them equal representation according to population they would weaken thier political voice and message. Thierfor the ‘other’ minorities are excluded(not overtly but anybody of color knows that you don’t need a XXX need not apply to know that you are not welcome). If you question this ask yourself why are asians/hispanic not given the same minority status as black. Those that would declare this as racist, I can back it up with facts.

At the time that the NAACP was formed, ‘colored’ was the term used in reference to black people which is why it has been associated with us the most. The name obviously hasn’t been changed since that time but the politically correct name for ‘colored’ people has. I hope this clears up any confusion.

The NAACP is as racist as the KKK, but they have such a ‘holier than thou’ attitude that nobody dares to challenge them. Black racism is rampant in America, but anyone who points that out is labelled as a ‘racist’ himself. It’s a really nasty double-standard.

I know non-blacks who are members of the NAACP. It was founded by Blacks and Jews but it is meant to help everyone.
