Why is there not an Asian or Native American or Hispanic in the NAACP? Are we not ‘colored’, i.e., not ‘white’?

…why is it that Asians and Hispanics and other ethnicities, who are traditionally as racist against my people (African Americans) as whites, if not moreso, become ‘offended’ because they are not represented by our organizations and leaders? Funny, no one ever hears from you people when Black people are being mistreated or murdered? You do your level best to disassociate yourselves from us, particularly hispanics of African descent (YES THEY DO EXIST! – TELL THEM THEY’RE BLACK AND THEY COME APART AT THE SEAMS) you all have the same misperceptions about us; that the majority of us are negative in some shape or form. You have no respect or regard for us, you don’t even consider us ‘equal’ to you; yet you have the audacity to ask whether or not you are represented by the NAACP? Or, when your asses are being kicked, you suddenly want to us all to ‘be one race’ and come flocking to our leaders and organizations for assistance. I’m not sure if there are any Asians or Hispanics employed by the NAACP. Nor do I particularly care about that. But it burns me up that you would ask this question of an organization created for the betterment and well being of African Americans, a group of people that Asian people have a reputation for disregarding and disrespecting on a regular basis.

Membership in the NAACP is open to all persons. The segregation laws and practices of the past were primarily targeted at blacks, so those who benefitted the most (blacks), joined in large numbers.

Yes, The NAACP is open to everyone. The organization was founded with the help of influential whites in 1909. In fact a few years ago the Richmond, Va Chapter of NAACP helped a South Asian doctor file a discrimination complaint against her supervisor at a hospital(her supervisor was black).

statistically, i suspect that there are non-black people of color involved in these agencies.. the naacp, specifically, was founded by a group black and white (mostly jewish) individuals; the main focus was african-american civil rights… From the height of the civil rights movement on, i’m not sure what the relationship the NAACP had with other ethnic community activist groups (latino, asian, native american, etc.), but that would be interesting to look at. especially nowadays, ‘Coalition Partners’ is a buzzword that many activist groups use when two distinct groups get together. There should be a local NAACP office in Houston, you can probably approach them for information about your question, i’m sure they wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Hispanic is a term used to describe a cultural group of people who are descended from countries in Latin America. They cannot be considered as Coloured people since by race most Hispanics are classified as Caucasians. The US census classifies Americans as belonging to 3 distinct groups; Caucasians, African Americans and Asians. NAACP mainly represents the interests of African Americans. There are numerous organizations in the US representing the Asian American population which you can join.

The president of the NAACP is Benjamin Chavez. LIke many Latinos (and also Natives), his Latin heritage is mixed with Black. So was another famous NAACP activist, Medgar Evers.

Anyone can join. The name of the organization reflects the times in which it was born. All over the country whites, asians and hispanics are members. Personal preference, lack of cultural understanding and simply not being personnaly implicated historically by segregation, Jim Crow, lynchings, bombings etc. and the nuances of racisim both institutional and personal aremajor factors also. But rest assured that anyone offended by any portion of the above is welcome as active participants or donors.

All you have to do is purchase a membership and you can be a ‘card carrying member’ with all the priviledges of any other member. All races are welcomed. History will show you that whites and Jews were present at the beggining and have always been board members.

Hi Kim: At the time the NAACP was founded, blacks in this country were called ‘cored’. That is why the organization has that name. However, if you have a need or concern, I am certain that your local NAACP chapter will gladly assist any person or, at the least, refer you to an organization that can help you. peace, bj

Many black radicals in the late sixties in fact discounted the NAACP because of its white members. Besides the name is kind of dated now. Who still refers to a person as being colored?

I believe that some of the co-founders of the NAACP were White. In addition to that There is nothing that would keep non Black people from joining.

I think that the entire racial issue in the United States is rediculous. Asians are not applicable as minorities for many scholarships because they are generally culturally studious and do well in an educational system. Blacks, once upon a time in a galaxy far far away discriminated, are eligible to so many scholarships, employments, and other specialties that it has gotten out of hand. And the saddest of all is that it is all based on color. For example, an Sudanese born immigrant to the U.S. who has ancient origins in Europe but for centuries his family has been in Sudan, therefore white is not eligible for ‘black’ specialties. But in the same situation with the exception that the immigrant is black, the immigrant is a commodity to employers and university scouts because of his skin color.
