RACParticipantI am Hispanic and would never think of asking people to back up out of my way unless I had car problems. I think what you ran into was not a Hispanic thing as much as a young person thing; you did state these were young people. It seems to me a lot of young people have not yet learned what is appropriate and what is not. I think if you start looking at the age of the person instead of the color, you will see I am right.

Mark S.ParticipantThe following has happened to me twice in the past six months, in a Hispanic part of town. While driving in a movie theater parking lot, suddenly the car in front of me stops, and a teenager/young adult Hispanic motions or shouts out of the window for me to back up. In the first instance, the driver had apparently passed a parking aisle they wanted to turn into. In the second, we were in the exit driveway, and the driver apparently changed his mind about wanting to exit that way. In neither case was the way ahead blocked, nor was there any reason the driver should have asked a stranger to do them such a favor, simply for their own personal convenience. What I want to know is, is this a Hispanic thing? Anyone raised in the United States knows this is inappropriate behavior.

John K.ParticipantIt sounds to me like you are simply encountering rude behavior. It happens all the time up here in New York/New Jersey, with people from all walks of life. I would like to address something about your question, though. You seem to imply that Hispanics are not raised in the United States. Are you operating under the assumption that Hispanics are all adult-aged immigrants? If so, maybe that false assumption is affecting your point of view. Just something to think about.

SR28495ParticipantI’ve visited four Mexican border towns in the past few years and noticed that they have a completely different way of driving, i.e. they don’t have many rules. They’re crazy! I know you’re in Houston and not Mexico, but maybe they modeled their driving after their parents (who could be from Mexico) or maybe they were from Mexico themselves. Or maybe they were just teenagers testing their limits with an adult (you). Anyway, I’m not too far away from Houston and hear that you’re all maniacs on the road!
