What is the significance of the undergarments Mormons are supposed to wear? When I was a kid, I remember the Mormon kids having to wear slightly different Physical Education or soccer uniforms if the shorts were not long enough to cover their undergarments. I always wondered what were the origins of wearing specific undergarments as part of the Mormon religion. I would also like to know how it relates to modern life.

First, a little clarification. None of the Mormon kids you are referring to were wearing any specific undergarments. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not begin to wear the garments until after he or she has attended a temple, ‘…wherein sacred ordinances, rites, and ceremonies are performed which pertain to salvation and exaltation in the kingdom of God…’ Elder Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine. This normally does not occur until around age 19 or later. Mormon kids wear the same kind of undergarments as any other kid. The basic significance behind the undergarments is that they are a symbolic spritual shield and a constant reminder to those who wear it of the covenants made in the temple. These promises made to God are personal dedications to Him relating to obedience to His commandments and gospel.

The garments are worn by faithful members of the church upon making sacred covenants with the Lord in the temple. By convenants, I mean that we have made promises to the Lord that we will obey his commandments, keep ourselves honest and chaste and morally clean, and devote our lives in service to Him. Along with the baptismal convenant, these covenants are central to our worship. Wearing them is not unlike a pastor wearing a clerical collar to signify ordination to the priesthood; however, there is no professional LDS priesthood, so we all have normal jobs and community responsibilities. The garment is instead worn beneath normal clothing as an internal reminder of our covenants with the Lord. Members make these covenants only when they have the understanding and maturity to do so — usually no earlier than age 19. There is no corresponding clothing for children or for members who haven’t yet been through the temple.

I don’t know a whole lot, I’m a pretty knew member to the church. What I do know is that they signify eternal covenants that they make in the temple. It is a deeply religious symbol of these covenants they make. Another thing I know is that they are not to be shown because of their sacredness, they are not to be paraded before the world. I have heard a comparison between the mormon garment and the clothing that clergy of other faiths wear. Since all members of the church are called to lead and teach at various times, all are considered clergy in a sense and wear the garment. The garment reminds them of their promises and duties. Only members who have been through the temple (usually only married or returned missionaries) wear the garment.

No offense, but I think your memory may be faulty. Mormons begin wearing unique undergarments after visiting a Mormon temple and taking part in sacred rites and covenants there. This is usually done by young men when they leave on their mission and by women when they get married. In either case, the individual must be an adult and found worthy to enter the temple by his/her ecclesiastic leader. It is not something school-age children would participate in. It is a very special, sacred ceremony, the details of which are not discussed outside the temple (but are available on several Internet sites if you do a search). The undergarments, or garments, as they are called, have stitched marks on them in several places that remind the wearer daily of the covenants he/she has made with God.
