Why do men have an innate compulsion to put women down?

That’s a loaded question if I ever heard one. I have known a lot of men – in fact as an engineer most of my coworkers are men – yet I have never noticed and ‘inate compulsion’ in them to put down anybody. I have known individual men who were jerks, just as I have known individual women who were jerks. I have never been put down by my husband, father, uncles, male cousins or heard these men put down other women in the family. Now, I have heard men griping or complaining about certain attributes of specific women or women in general, but no more so then I have heard women complaining about men.

Maybe you’re hanging around the wrong men. People who belittle others generally tend to focus on those they perceive as weakest in order to (in their minds) mark their social status as higher in rank. To the men you’re speaking of, women are the lower social order – unless you throw in blacks or us queers. Maya Angelou, speaking at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Houston, said it best (and I’m paraphasing): ‘I am too old to suffer such foolishness. I walk away, but not before letting the fool know why. If you don’t let them know why you’re leaving, they won’t be able to associate their foolishness with any consequences. Worse! They might actually think you agree with them. Do not suffer – and do not be silent.’

The way I see things is this: There are just as many women who badmouth guys as there are the opposite. In the constant ‘battle of the sexes’ it seems as though guys take a lot of the brunt. Say, for instance, that a woman is at a women’s rights march in Washington. She speaks out against men who badmouth women. She says, realistically, that ‘all guys are this way,’ or, ‘all guys are that way,’ and that, as a general rule, guys are dumber than women. Please tell me- who needs to respect the opposite gender more? Isn’t it the woman who is being sexist? Although it doesn’t exactly go with the original question, it does have a lot of merit. Please consider words carefully. It’s not that all guys badmouth girls. Of course, there are the few/many that do, and I don’t condone them or their actions, but generally, guys are a good populace. Please respect that all people are not the same. That is just useless stereotyping. Thank you for considering this point.
