raziaMemberTechnically, as with pretty much all organized religions, one is supposed to marry someone who shares their same beliefs – i.e., a Muslim man must marry a Muslim female, and vice versa. Actually marrying someone of a different faith is considered a sin. Of course, God should be the only single judge. Though… I grew up with a Pakistani father (Muslim) who met and fell in love with my Italian, Roman Catholic mother. She, however, for a long time didn’t believe things that she was taught in schools about religion as she was growing up. She met my dad, they married. And completely by her own will and decision, did she choose to convert to Islam because to *her* it was the religion that made sense to her. I think though, every case is different. So in Islam though, in God’s eyes, a Muslim marrying a non-muslim is considered a sin. But that’s all between the individuals at hand, and God… Hope this makes sense!

Janet20967ParticipantNothing. If they are so religious they probably wouldn’t marry them. Otherwise what would hapen if a Christian married a non-believer?

MuhaParticipantIn the Qu’ran, It is enjoined upon Muslims by God to marry another muslim, and if he/she isn’t, then let him/her become one before marrying. If that doesn’t happen, let’s look at common sense. A true muslim would only agree to marry a man/woman who possesses traits that are deemed worthy to a true muslim, therefore one could say that this woman/man, though not muslim, would be more likely to become muslim for the love of the other. While God would be disappointed that the other did not become Muslim, perhaps because of some insecurity, the non-muslim and muslim would not be necessarily be condemned. All actions and consequences of both are judged, and God sees fit to save who he wishes. But, let’s face it, you won’t find many devout muslims wanting to marry, say, Marilyn Manson, unless he becomes another Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam, he-he!

TanithParticipantI took a Intro to Islam course which covered this topic. A Muslim man may marry a Jew or Christian woman but he must let her practice her religion if she chooses. They also must decide which religion to raise their children in. However, a Muslim woman may not marry a non-Muslim. I don’t really understand why that is- could anyone could explain? This is the orthodox, traditional Islam- a Muslim feminist would still probably marry a non-Muslim if she wanted to.

Cynthia31769ParticipantI believe, according to Islamic tradition, that it is OK for Muslim men to marry ‘people of the book,’ or Christians or Jews. The understanding is that the children will be raised Muslim.

Hayat R.MemberTo literally answer your question ‘What happens when Muslims marry outside the faith’, the answer is nothing. They don’t get shot down with a bolt of lightening or killed or stoned or whatever. But here are the specific rules they govern themselves by and the reasons. Men can marry ‘Women of the Book’ if they are pious and righteous with the stipulation that their children be Muslim. That includes Jews and Christians. The stipulation is listed because for Muslims, as in most religions, it would be counterproductive to the religious cause and purpose for mankind to raise non-believers once one has found the faith. Muslim men are forbidden to marry polytheists, atheists and those who have changed Islam. They are forbidden these ‘non-believers’ because the difference in faith would be so severe as to cause problems in raising a harmonious household. Muslim women are only to marry Muslim men. The reason for this is because often in society men impose their beliefs on their wives. This might be due to the fact that they are allowed to do it, or perhaps the women compromise more, or maybe it is due to force. Anyways, thats how life has been in history. So, a Muslim woman might marry a non-Muslim man only for him to impose his faith on her and their children. That is just one common reason. Hope this helps!

Roberta29556ParticipantI read a story earlier today, in a doctor’s waiting room. The story was a first-hand account by a Muslim woman who with her family immigrated to the U.S. from the Middle East. Her father had arranged a marriage for her in her native country, but she found herself unable to go through with the match. In order to avoid the marriage, she had to hide from her family for 4 years. Why? Because in refusing to marry a Muslim she had ‘disgraced’ her family and it is a Muslim country to kill any woman who does so. I suspect most Muslim families would respond in much the same way to any Muslim woman who married a non-Muslim. The woman later converted to Christianity and relations with her family are still strained. Several of her closest relatives refuse even to speak to her.

AMParticipantCynthia is correct. It is okay for Muslim men to marry non-muslim women (only the people of the book; Christians and Jews) with the intent to raise the children as muslim. As for Muslim women, they are not permitted to marry non-Muslim men because the man is usually the dominant person in the relationship. The islamic religion is very protective over spreading the message of Islam and raising children on the religion.
