There seem to be a lot of people in this country who want to ban marriage between gay and lesbian couples but are willing to grant gay and lesbian couples ‘civil unions’. Are not all marriages in this country civil unions as defined by our laws? Is marriage by a Justice of the Peace not a civil union? If a couple marries and has this marriage sanctified by their church or religion, how does this differ from the civil unions these people would offer to gay and lesbian couples if they also choose to have their civil union sanctified?
