K. MitchellMemberIs it possible for a person born a female to be brought up and live as a male (or vice versa), and still feel completely normal?

Harry21415ParticipantIt depends on whether that person felt they already belonged to the opposite sex. I have thought about this one a lot, as I myself live between the genders. I was born female and am now perceived as male, but I believe myself to be neither. This is partly because I don’t believe the diffences between male and female are as huge as we all think.
If a child were brought up as a girl while possesing a penis, it would probably work out OK until they could comprehend that all other girls didn’t have a penis. However I think it depends on the strength of the gendered activity around them. If they were brought up in a truly equal environment where everyone was treated the same, the idea of male and female would not be so separate and therefore not so much of an issue. If, however, they were raised in a more traditional setting with parents, teachers, relatives and friends separating the sexes in terms of how they are treated and what they wear, etc., then it would be very hard for that child to feel ‘normal.’ They would probably grow up with an identity much like a transsexual and try to assimilate as much as possible with their assumed gender, but most likely unsuccessfully. It is likely, although not certain, that they would eventually feel the urge to revert to their biological sex.
I hope this makes sense. It all depends on your idea of ‘normal,’ which is debatable in itself. If, finally, they believed they were the opposite sex anyway, this would be the most preferable way to treat that individual. It would be good, but I guess you can’t tell at such an early age.

Linda22700ParticipantThere is a case of a baby boy having an accident while having his foreskin trimmed and losing his penis. The doctors did a ‘gender reidentification’ on him and he lived as a girl until around 14 or 15. He never felt like a girl, always wanted to do boy things, and as soon as he found out about the accident, he went as a man once more. Now he has a wife and lives a fairly normal life. I think the book about him is called ‘as Nature made him’.

Brittany19283Participantof course, most females who act like men or vice versa is all depending on how they were brought up or their fanily structure. For instance a girl that grows up with only boys has a 75 percent chance to act like a male and vice versa. Its completely normal they are called tom boys, but a boy that acts or dresses like girl is either feminine or what we call homosexual.
