I deliver pizza and subs part-time and noticed that blacks almost never tip. Why? The others where I work say the same thing. Are there others out there who notice this?

I don’t know about any difference in black people’s tipping habits, though I have heard the rumors (and discount them as unproven). I will say this, though: Anyone, regardless of race or whatever, who doesn’t want to leave a tip shouldn’t eat in restaurants where tipping is expected. The service has to be pluperfect awful before I will not leave a tip – the litmus test here being “Do I need to tell the manager?” Once or twice I have found myself short of cash, so I left the best tip I could and explained to the waiter/waitress that I was tapped out and regretted the small tip.

If someone has a philosophical objection to tipping, they should write to all the restaurant chains and try to change the system. Until then, tipping is part of eating out in North America. If you don’t like the rule, don’t eat out. (The same would apply to home delivery: If I want to avoid the tip, I go to the restaurant and pick it up myself.)

    Amen, Augustine!

I was a waitress for almost 10 years. People support their families (I did) with these jobs. It is a legitimate and can be a lucrative job provided you’re in a prime location. The math is simple: Voluntarily leave an appropriate 15 percent or better tip, or force businesses to charge you more for the plate so that they can pay higher wages to retain employees, or be subjected to tip-included bills. When I was in my 20s I was earning as much if not more as my friends, who were employed with mainstream companies in entry-level positions.

On the average, I’d say waiters are often far more sophisicated and open-minded than many of their clientele. In the nicer places where I worked, we paid more attention to how a customer treated us and behaved during the course of the meal. When we did classify, it was more likely between the real diners and the novices. People who eat out frequently are more relaxed, friendly and generally tip. Novices tended to be either anxious and/or demanding and tip less, if at all.

We do these jobs to finish school, pursue other goals or provide greater financial support than we found in otherwise marginal jobs. I won’t say biases don’t exist, but they were hardly fast and hard judgments. In other words, we didn’t automatically moan if we were seated a table of women or minorities. At least, professional, seasoned waiters don’t. Instead, they treat their customers with equal importance and gauge their probability of a good tip more on the customer’s behavior. I learned early on not to look down on the guy with the raggedy jeans (sitting in a nice place) nor the senior citizen ladies. Prejudging, besides being ethically wrong, could cost you a good tip, and afterall I’m there to earn a living. My experience was that I made more in the suburbs than I did in the city. It appeared that the availability of disposable cash and social-economic class had a greater impact on the money I made than any other variable.

We all judge on some level. The least we can do is get honest and admit it. I thought some might be interested in the waiter’s point of view.

IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT MANY NOT ALL BLACKS DO NOT TIP FOR SERVICE AS WELL AS OTHER GROUPS. THERE ARE SOME BLACKS WHO WILL OVER-TIP TO COMPENSATE FOR THE ACTIONS OF OTHER BLACKS. INFORMAL RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THE MOST FREWUENT REASONING BY THE POOR TIPPERS IS THE PERCEPTION OF BEING ‘VICTIMS’ AND NEED TO BE GIVEN THINGS THAT OTHERS PAY FOR AS PART OF THE NEVER ENDING PAY-BACK DUE THEM.

Maybe no one tips you because you really don’t do that much work – you just bring a pizza up to the door and drive around all day; not too hard, in my opinion. My advice is to look for another line of work.

That comment is the typical black attitude in regard to tipping. I have delivered pizzas and waited tables over the last four years, while I worked my way through college, and I’ll tell you that the generalization that blacks are lousy tippers is entirely true. As far as tipping the delivery driver, they are the worst. They generally won’t tip, and if they do, it’s not more than a dollar. Whites, on the other hand, average about a $3 tip per delivery. I’ve seen this enough to know reality. It doesn’t matter if they’re of the same class. In fact, you can have a white person, living in a trailer, who’ll generally tip you about two to three dollars. On the other hand, you can have a black person, living in a nice $200,000 house, and he’ll not tip, or tip lightly. I’ve seen this all too often to know. As far as tipping the waiter/waitress, blacks, generally, are sorry tippers. While whites usually tip around $5, blacks average around $2. What gets me is the comment, ‘Well, it’s not hard work, or, ‘find another line of work’. That is so ignorant. Pizza delivery, or delivery in general, puts extreme wear on one’s vehicle. Autos do take more to maintain. Furthermore, it’s a service. If you’re too lazy to drive to the store, then you don’t deserve a pizza if you don’t tip. As far as waiters, these people only make $2.13 per hour, and that is taxed. You can’t live off that. You make nearly all your money on tips. Can’t you see reality, pal?

I work at an upscale restaurant and give all my customers awesome service. On average my tips from white customers are 20 percent or more, and my tips from black customers are 2 to 10 percent. I am not racist, but on the whole, only a fraction of my black customers tip well. This goes for British people as well. And just for those who do not know, the average server makes $2.13 an hour and gets taxed on at least 8 percent of his or her food sales, and THEN has to tip out bartenders, bussers, etc., so for those who do not tip, your server is actually losing money by waiting on you.

Perhaps its because as a race we earn less than whites for the same jobs. Personally, I and people I know tip handsomely in the 20% range and it also depends upon how well the service is. Don’t generalize, we don’t all tip poorly and I reiterate, since you all make more money………

I give a standard 15% tip at restaurants. However, since I usually dine alone and don’t run a big bill, my tips do not seem too big. For example, dinner at The Sizzler will usually run about $12, and 15% is $1.80. I usually leave $2. It doesn’t sound like much, but when you consider my bill, its about right. I have to admit that I am not in the habit of tipping pizza boys. My reason: in my area of Los Angeles, I am actually charged an additional price for delivery. Ordering a pizza at home costs more than picking it up myself. If an am paying an addition charge, why should I tip you?
