Why does it seem that most men prefer long-haired women to short-haired women?

No to impugn any one man’s aesthetic sensibilities, but if men in general feel this way, it’s probably out of some sense that the sexes should be easily distinguishable and confined to certain standards of appearance. Thus men are supposed to have short hair, and women are supposed to have long hair. Women wear makeup, men don’t. Men watch ESPN, women watch soap operas. Personally I find all these to be rather antiquated notions. As for hair length, I personally think women look better with shorter hair. It’s certainly easier to take care of. I have persuaded one female friend of mine to get her hair cut from the thick ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ look to a more sensible Anita Baker-type bob, and she loves it. It takes less time to style and dry, and it’s certainly more confortable during these hot summer months. Another thing: Although long, wavy tresses may look good on trendy teens, they look absolutely ridiculous on any woman over the age of 40. Long hair on men is pretty yucky also.

In your age and racial group, men prefer long hair (shoulder length and longer) simply because it’s more feminine ‘socially’ speaking and thus more attractive. Now on a 50 year old woman, for example, mid-neck or higher looks more elegant, besides the fact that with long hair she may seem like not acting her age. I’ve travelled a lot and noticed this in most cultures and races where people have straight hair. Now in some extreme and radical circles women with short hair are preffered because they are making a statement (rave, neo-punk, etc). Anyhow, remember that historically women are associated with long hair and men with short. Only due to modern society is it that women have been allowed to carry short hair and wear pants. Oh, and congrats for having over two years of college at your age.

Long hair (on the head) is considered a secondary sex characteristic. It makes a woman seem more feminine. I don’t think most men have a strong preference, however.

I’m guessing because women with short hair might threaten the egos of men with more Neanderthal world views? I go for long hair myself, but I also have very long hair, and for whatever reason I’ve always been more attracted to straight-haired women than curly. Couldn’t explain it, though.

Women with long hair tend to signify greater femininity, while short-haired women tend to signify masculinity. Most women with short hair tend to be aggressive, in leadership, unsympathetic, etc. Women with longer hair tend to be gentler, helpers, good listeners. At least, most of my experience points in this direction.

I am just the opposite: I have a marked preference for short hair. And I definitely also strongly prefer curly hair to straight.

Ronald V.: I think you got it all wrong for saying short-haired women are more masculine and aggressive than women with long hair. What in the world you got that from? I have short hair and I’m feminine, and I don’t act like I want to be ‘one of the boys.’ Besides, where I’m from, I get a lot of attention from guys with my ‘short hair,’ and they look at how pretty I am. They don’t look at my short hair and think, ‘Man, she must be a dyke or something’ or, ‘She’s trying to be a guy.’ Maybe that’s how you think, but to tell the truth, the way you think is crazy.

Strangely, enough, I have recieved *more* attention from men since I shaved (yes, shaved) my long hair off a couple weeks ago. Some guys like the classic ideal of long hair that they can run fingers through. Others see a girl like me, with almost no hair to speak of, and think it’s just as femine and sexy. Though, of course, I have had to deal with a couple men that have approached me and asked me where my ‘girlfriend’ was – assuming that just because I have very short hair, I am a lesbian.

Personally, I prefer short-haired women. I find short-haired women more adventurous, sexual, and personally, I think they knock the socks off long-haired girls in terms of sexiness. I would not NOT go out with a long-haired woman, however, I personally seek out short-haired ones. They seem more down-to-earth, too.

From a evolutionary and biological standpoint, long, healthy-looking hair is a signal that a potential mate is healthy, well fed, and is probably disease free. Lots of characteristics in nature operate like this; characteristics like a male peacock’s feathers, which, if they are not eating well, have significant genetic disorders, or are diseased, very quickly deteriorate in appearance. The opposite sex likes to see a display of these characteristics to prove the contrary.

Personaly, I think girls with long hair who wear it down look nicer. It shows off their face, and lets them show off their hair care.

It’s hardwired in men’s testicles: like big breasts and big, round butts, long hair attracts men. Short hair can also attract men, but usually the woman must have attitude, nice clothing and make-up in order to not look like a boy/man/transsexual.
