I am an emergency services worker, so I get to all parts of town. Can anyone tell me why, the poorer the neighborhood, more trash and broken bottles litter the streets?

One factor to consider is the effect of poverty, especially crushing poverty, on the psyche of the individual. If a person has low self-esteem, that person will take less interest in the appearance of his/her surroundings. And believe you me, poverty is great at crushing the spirit. Some people may be strong enough to resist this, but not many. The incentive to keep things neat and take pride in your surroundings just isn’t there. I’ve journeyed into this pit and do not want to go back. However, with no safety net or job security, it is all too horrifyingly possible.

Think of it this way… If you were worried about how to keep food on the table and keep the lights on and rats off of your child’s head, would you care if there were trash outside your house?

To Kerrie, It is true that poor people have things to worry about. However that doesn’t give anybody a reason to trash the neighborhood. It doesn’t take that much more effort to throw something in the trash can. I have been to ‘ghetto’ cities in different states and in Canada before, but I would have never guessed it.
