Lorne-WParticipantI would like to know what the benefit is of valuing diversity. I have worked and played with groups that are single-sex and single-race, as well as groups of mixed sex/race. I have not seen any benefits from having mixed groups. I seem to have just as much fun or get just as much done in either one. I want to know how specifically I and my neighbors will live better if we have a diverse neighborhood or work place. I really don’t want answers related to oppression or power groups, etc. What I want is a practical answer I can use on a day-to-day basis.

Mark B.ParticipantDiversity helps break down barriers. In my workplace, I work around women, men, Caucasian, black, Hispanic, Asian, etc. All of this adds up to learning more about people and cultures. How does that relate to work? It means I have learned not to exclude anyone when seeking help or answers to a work problem. Learning to utilize all the resources around me makes me more efficient. The obvious social improvements go without saying.

Sanford F.MemberFrom a purely pragmatic viewpoint, diversity ensures the survival of the American standard of living. The history of American success is a history of immigrants/minorities by their efforts moving into mainstream America and in turn refreshing and revitalizing the economy and culture. America at its best is a meritocracy where the best and brightest can reap the greatest rewards. Without a committment to diversity, we limit the pool of potential contributors. Diversity also involves changing ways of doing things, which may expain why you personally don’t consider it ‘fun’. However, since diversity is the means to continue enjoying the world’s highest standard of living, it is probably worth an extra effort to try positive interaction with different races and cultures. With the right attitude, you might be pleasantly surprised.
