Jennifer30865ParticipantIn an era of PC this and PC that, how do you define or label someone, if you really even need to, and not offend that person? As an example, I’m Chinese, and people think calling me Oriental is offensive to me, but I think otherwise. How do you not offend someone and still be able to define that person? I know there are some who say there is no need to define others, but if you really had to, what is the correct way?

JenniferParticipantBased on the way you’ve articulated your question, it seems that you feel driven to define people because THEY want their ethnicity to be acknowledged. If that’s the case, why not just ask them what, if any, is their preference?

ACC24037ParticipantIt might interest you that ‘Oriental’ is being removed from place names in a move led by Asian-American activists, much like s***w is, based on the objections of American Indians. See the full story at: http://www.indianz.com/SmokeSignals/Headlines/show.asp?IDfull=tc4112001-1
