FreedaBeeParticipantWhy are Latino people so messy when it comes to the outside appearance of their homes? I used to think this was related to living in poorer neighborhoods and not having the resources to take care of their yards and garden. Of course, that never explained the trash, since it doesn’t take any time or money NOT to throw garbbage in your yard. About a year ago a Latino family moved in next-door to us. I live in southern Orange County in CA – a predominantly white area. While you won’t see my neighborhood on ‘Laguna Beach’ or ‘The OC,’ the homes are in the $750K to $1M price range and people make an effort to keep in looking nice. The people are nice – quiet, nice kids, blah, blah, blah – but the yard is a mess. Not overgrown, but trashy. They actually do mow the lawn, but don’t pick up the candy wrappers, old food (banana skins, apple cores, orange peels), smashed soda cans, broken toys and so on. The worst part is that they’ve decided that our house is part of their landfill and we periodically find chicken bones, popsicle sticks, paper plates and fast food wrappers, tossed over the fence into our yard. I hate to perpetuate stereo-types, but they have to start somewhere. So I know there are a lot of Latino people who will want to respond by saying, ‘Well, I’m Latino and I keep my home very nice.’ I’m sure that you do and I really believe you, but you’re not who I want to hear from. I want to hear from the Latinos who trash their yards (and possibly their neighbor’s) and apparently don’t mind the mess. Is it a cultural thing? Am I going to offend them if I ask that they stop throwing trash in my yard?
