AleaParticipantI’m a straight black female living in New York, and my best friend is a Mexican guy who happens to be gay. He is light-skinned and has the mestizo look, I guess it’s called, with slight Indian features, while I’m brown-skinned. I am usually not conscious about strangers’ reactions to me in the street or just don’t pay attention, but lately something has been making me uncomfortable about hanging out with him. We get a lot of stares from Latino men. Some guys have completely stopped what they were doing to stare at us while we were out. A few times while we were crossing a street and a group of Latino guys were across the street, they would all turn around and stare at us. The stares seem to be more than just curiosity. While most often they are blank stares, it does make us uncomfortable. Are Latino men culturally not keen on interracial dating with blacks?

Dan27344ParticipantHere in L.A., blacks and Latinos have a long history of not getting along too well. It’s kind of complicated how that all came about, but it’s getting better thanks to hip hop culture and whatnot. But as it is and as it was, it’s seen as a rarity, even an oddity for a Latino and a black woman to go together, as well as vice versa. One is far more likely to see a Latino with a white woman, which is somewhat of a growing trend. Since it’s so rare out here, it causes heads to turn. Possibly as much if not moreso than would a white man with a black woman. I figured it would be different in New York because Puerto Ricans and Dominicans are culturally and racially very close to black people. My guess would be because your friend is of Mexican heritage, and PRs and Dominicans who see it find it odd as do other Mexicans.

TahziParticipantDown here in Texas they do the same thing. My wife of three years is a Latina. She doesn’t seem to mind but something inside me wans to ask, ‘Can I help you, friend? I don’t understand this kind of primitive behavior. I think it’s taboo in thier culture though.
