sandraMemberI was noticing that the numbers of people in non-commital relationships seems to be increasing. It seems that people are casually dating more and having less serious relationships altogether. Why is our view points on relationships changing??

ShirleyAveryParticipantI think that’s a good observation, though I don’t know if scientific studies back that up. People have become so busy and self-absorbed in this country. They view commitments as “giving up freedom”. In general, guys have always wanted to screw around before settling down, if they ever do settle down. Since women don’t withhold sex as much as they did before good birth control, they don’t have as much leverage in a relationship, i.e., don’t give men as much reason to make a commitment. Just Curious

DotParticipantMost people can’t afford the “traditional” married with children template anymore. They know that to make those commitments will guarantee a life of financial struggle. Back in the days of job security, assured healthcare and pension, decent public schools, affordable college tuition one didn’t have to make such huge sacrifices in order to live a family life. My local paper just did a study that showed it costs 127K per year in our city for a family of four to live a “middle class” life. Granted this is an expensive city bit things are tight all over. No wonder the birthrate is falling dramatically amongst the educated classes.
