Curious31925ParticipantWhy is it that these days kids seem much more prone to violence? I am only 28 and perhaps it is simply time clouding my memory or romantizing my youth, but I don’t remember things being this bad.

Buddy J.ParticipantI think there are three reasons kids are more prone to violence these days:
1) The media has only recently, within the last few years, made youth violence an issue. Violence has always occurred, I would guess, but only now do the vast majority of people see the statistics and hear about what young people do after school.
2) Latch-key kids. When school lets out at 3 p.m., many parents are not waiting for their child to come home. They are working. Children feel neglected and bored.
3) Concerning the media again, when adolescents see individualistic people like themselves get major attention from the networks, it can make a neglected person feel violence is the only way to get attention. High school is tough, and many children feel isolated from their peers. They are nobodies, like the people given attention on TV. Attention is very important, and when there is none given, problems occur.User Detail :

philMemberi understand your concern on this matter, i to once thought that things were gettin worse at one point, but i soon realised that it is mearly what you hear and what you know that can change your views on things massively. most people dont get the full story of goings on, and others dont know anything about them at all. bad things happen around the city- a guy was stabbed in my city a few weeks ago and nobody knew anything about it, another was hit around the head with some metal crutches and everyone i knew had info on it, the media had made the situation a whole lot worse. lots of bad things happen around you oblivious to wether you find out about them, just remember crime is generally on the decrease and that most assault offences are made by people who know their victims, they aint gonna get away with it!

jimParticipantI am a 17 year old male and don’t belive kids are more pron to violence or are any worse than they were back in your day. I think you see it more because of the media and the way they hype everything up. Things really aren’t any worse.

answergirlParticipantlook at the media. its almost like they promote violence. im 23 and my high school had a handful of kids who were expelled for hitting teachers, bomb scares, and other random acts of violence. its sick.

Tiffany GibsonParticipantI think everyone feels like this… that it is getting worse every day. The Michael Moore documentary deals with this exact question in Bowling for Columbine. He wonders if it is the history of America, the gun control issues, violent video games… what is causing it all? The answers he comes across are rather suprising, and made me feel a bit silly for all of those times I have nervously looked over my shoulder!

Wake UPMemberThe world is a much more violent place than when we were children. I think that the coverage of the war in Iraq and movies, where unnecessary violence is being used, are cofusing not only the adults in this country, but also the children.
