Ann L. LowensteinParticipantJewish culture, like Asian culture, has traditionally placed a very strong emphasis on education, success, striving, sacrificing short-term gratification for long-term financial security, and all the other qualities that define highly successful people. Jewish culture, like Asian culture, also still embraces the concepts of shaming or honoring your family through your failures or successes. American culture at large has come to view these concepts as ‘provincial’, ‘quaint’ and ‘old-fashioned’ in the last couple decades, so if Jews and Asians seem to succeed out of proportion to other Americans, it’s because they’ve been taught and expected to do so.

Laurie-BParticipantI’m not 100 percent sure if we are wealthier or more successful on the average, although I guess we are. However, I *can* tell you why there are so many wealthier or successful Jews. It’s because learning/scholarship/reading have been an intrinsic part of Judaism for at least 2,000 years. Religious Jews try to spend hours and hours studying the Jewish Bible and related literature each day. Thus, Jews were literate back when most of Europe was illiterate. When Jews were permitted to move about in the larger (Christian, Muslim, etc.) culture, they already had the tradition of reading and studying. It was easy enough to transfer that skill to studying secular law, medicine, etc. Thus, many Jews found it not too great a stretch to go into professions that required education. Other reasons: at some points in history, Jews in Europe were not permitted to own land. Thus they had to learn a job skill that they could carry in their heads.

I have many friends that ae Jewsih. When I go out in town they seem to be penny pinchers. They complain when somthing costs a dollor fifty.
