J.MemberWhy is sex with children legal in Japan? What is the reasoning behind it? How do the Japanese feel about this ‘Rorikon’ (Japanese for ‘Lolita complex’ – meaning an older man after a young girl.)? Is there an opposing view? How do Japanese Americans feel about it?

Ethan J.ParticipantSex with children is not legal in Japan. The age of consent in Japan is 16. In most American states it is 18, but I believe in a few it is lower. Rorikon is a type of manga, or Japanese comic book. Comics are not just for kids in Japan and are just as legitimate reading for all ages as books or magazines are in the United States. Rorikon is a subgroup of hentai, or pervert, manga. It is produced because children participating in sexual acts is illegal. Rorikon represents a very small amount of the manga in Japan, and while I am not Japanese, I have been told there are many moral objections there to hentai, and specifically rorikon. There is no organized legislative effort to ban its sale and production, however.

Kent26458ParticipantI don’t know about Japan’s consent law, but it is wise to realize that many Scandanavian countries, and Australia – which is rather similar to the United States – permit children to have sex with other children, as long as the age difference is not greater than two years.

Edward25581ParticipantIt is not legal in Japan to have sex with prepubescent children. I forget what the cutoff age is, but it would not be permissible to have sex with an 11-year-old girl, for example. Rape is illegal in any case. However, there are no significant consensual sex laws regarding teenage girls. The main reason is that until recently, it wasn’t common enough to merit attention. If it did occur, typically the couple would be either seeking a marriage or forced into it. Since the economic depression of the ’80s, times have changed. An increasing phenomenon is the practice of ‘compensated dating,’ in which an older man pays a younger girl to be his girlfriend. The awareness of this is growing in Japan, and unprecedented laws are being passed to prohibit it. Ironically, it’s the girls who end up having to pay the penalty, which is usually a hefty fine. It seems when it comes down to it, the Japanese put a lot more faith in a teenage girl to manage her own destiny than we would ever dream of doing in the United States. For the most part, they succeed.

Stephen27819ParticipantIt’s not legal, although as far as I know the minimum age for girls is set at the local level and varies from place to place – I seem to remember it being upped from 14 in the place where I lived after the outcry over schoolgirl prostitution. I think the whole attraction to young girls comes from Anime and manga (or did THAT come from an attraction to young girls?). The Japanese like cute stuff, and all girls think school uniforms, short skirts, pigtails, etc. are cute, so it kind of fuels itself. I’d also be interested in what Japanese people have to say about this.

AnnetteParticipantI lived in Japan for two years and recently traveled (October 2000) to Japan and saw many junior and high school girls taking part in ‘Compo-Dato’ (compensated dating). Thus, a 12- or 13-year-old girl arranges a date with a sariman (salary man) through the dating service available through her cell phone company. She makes about $2,000 for her first time, and about $500 each time thereafter. Nikes and Gucci bags, along with four-inch platform boots, are very expensive in Japan.
The Roricon (Lolita complex) has been alive and well in Japanese culture for a long time. Many TV movies and magazine features aimed at teen girls and guys, as well as adults, featured rape of a young female teen as an approved highlight of the movie or article. This was in the early ’90s – those values seemed alive and well, only later exploited to have the male fantasy realized, in the mid- to late-’90s. (Japanese men and some Americans have been going on child or teen sex tours in Thailand for a long time. I saw it firsthand in Bangkok and Patpao.)
I believe the exploding sex industry in Japan has to do with youth rebellion and a sexist culture with values both different and similar to Western values. At the prison where I work in the United States, about 50 percent are locked up for sex crimes that are openly accepted in Japan. (For example: Bukake – group masturbation on a schoolgirl’s face! She doesn’t even have to take off her uniform!) They do not consider it a crime, or they choose to look the other way when it occurs. This is partially due to a group-oriented culture that avoids conflict at all cost and wants to save face. Calling attention to a female who has been victimized (these girls don’t think of themselves as victims, but I wonder what sexual activity with older strangers will do to their psyche later on) or to the salaryman who made the arrangement will bring shame and attention to their whole family.
There is no simple analysis of Japan’s sex scene; I’m only offering my observances from living there. I hope this wonderful country (and it is beautiful, with good people – this includes the sexist salarymen) will find her own answers that stop abuse of young females. I’d appreciate a response from a bicultural Japanese and American person who has lived extensively in both countries.

J21156ParticipantSex with children in Japan is not legal. Yes there is an underground ‘compensated dating’ industry, but it has been illegal for a long time. The police in Japan are trying harder than they use to to crack down on underage prostitution, but they still have a ways to go. Many Japanese people don’t like compensated dating and feel it is immoral. Unfortunately the bad stuff gets the most attention in the news…
