Awhile back, I asked about the concept of purdah, but I did not get the replies I was looking for. I made many people angry because I worded my question badly, and I got a response from a Christian extremist that I found especialy offensive in how it negated my attempt to express tolerance. I was trying to say I understood the issue of modesty, the veil, and seeing past the stigmatism of outer appearance. What I didn’t approve of was what going on in, say, Taliban-ruled countries where a woman can be imprisoned or executed for stepping foot outside or if a gust of wind flashes her ankle. I don’t approve of excluding half of a culture’s society. Didn’t Muhammad say those who do not honor sexual equality will be punished by Iblis (Satan)? Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding, I do not want to be an ‘intrusive missionary of intolerance’, and for the half of my country that won’t admit to it, we screwed up in the Middle East and we’re sorry.
