Chris LynchMemberHey all, It has started to seem to me that the American media demonizes Islam as a driving force behind acts of terrorism, constantly saying things like ‘Islamic militants’ and such. The media in this country is very powerful and people don’t generally think too critically about the terminology used, but after so much repetition, it seems probable that most people would begin to develop prejudicial tendencies towards the religion itself. As a white, Christian American, I don’t think that I can know for sure whether I am seeing something that isn’t there, but it almost seems to me that there is an organized campaign to defame Islam in this country. Even though it is probably just the result of efforts to sell more papers, it still saddens me deeply. Of course news is going to be written for its target audience, and stories are going to be chosen to capture the interest of the largest possible group of people. This is why most articles are written at a grade school English level. This seemingly benign but insidious practice is rampant in my mind, though, and undermines my trust in the power of a free press. It seems to me that there are plenty of opportunities to cast Christianity in the same light, but it is never played up. See Uganda, Waco, or Jonestown for example. At this time it is coming to light that the ‘cult members’ in Uganda likely were murdered by their leader. My questions are these: Is this common in other countries, particularly predominately Judeo-Christian countries? Do those of you who are Muslim living in the U.S. feel this as well?
