I am a 23-year-old white female graduate student who was recently visiting a friend living in Mexico. I have very fair skin and was often referred to in Spanish as ‘little white girl’ or simply ‘whitey.’ My question is: How are these comments meant? I generally associate them with catcalls in the United States. Do people not understand they are offensive? Or should they be considered flattering?

Lol My boyfriend is a mexican. He calls me his guada. In spanish that is white women, or American women. I noticed everyone else called me guada also. So I asked (angrily for I decided it was an insult)’How would you like it if I called you a mexican all the time?!’ To my suprise they all laughed! They told me ‘We came from Mexico we are Mexicans. That is not a bad thing. You are white and from american so you are a guada. That is not a bad thing.’ To some mexicans it is in fact considered a good thing to be from a place as free as America. So no it is not an insult. You should be proud they liked you enough, and felt comfortable enough to affectionalty call you by a nick name.

the comments ,which you refer to, aren’t said just to you because you are an american. hispanics living in latin america don’t refer to americans as ‘white’. There are hispanics whom are white as well. Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race, and within this ethnicity ther are the 3 races , Caucasoid, mongloid, and negroid.In other words there are hispanics whom are white, black, and asian.
