Why do some people and/or cultures have a problem with mixed-race relationships and/or marriages?

As half of an interracial couple, I find that most people get their attitudes about interracial relations from their parents. I’ve been married to a black man for almost 10 years, and I knew when I met him that my parents would have no problems with us dating. My father’s comment was, “As long as he treats you well, I don’t care if he’s white, black, purple or green. But God help him if he doesn’t.” People also wonder how biracial children will be treated. My children are nine and seven and have never had problems. Maybe I’m just lucky so far, but I’ve always taught my kids that everyone is different in some way … either skin color, hair color, height, weight, etc. You’ll find in your life that everyone has a problem with something. The important thing is to know how you feel about racial issues and stay true to those beliefs.

I think that people who have a problem with interracial couples probably feel as if they have been inconvenienced or imposed upon simply because the love within that couple could not be controlled and therefore may imply that love could not be found within their own race(s) which in turn, would offend a lot of people

Unfortunately, we live in a culture that does not dare to be different. I personally don’t feel that skin color matters. Your degree of love does. Our culture is closed minded and very prudish, and doesn’t have this opinion.

i agree with beth, it’s all in how you’re raised. not ENTIRELY by parents, but a good portion. my father is black and my mother is white and they usually didn’t have anything negative to say about each other’s races. at times they did though. but what i think negatively about certain blacks, i got from my dad! my mother talked down more on sicilians than she did on blacks. to answer your question though, i think the main issue is that people want to believe that they are somehow better than others. that’s why everyone wants to have Jesus look like THEIR people. ever notice that? think about where He was born, there shouldn’t be TOO much discussion on that one. the biggest problem with inter-racial couplings is dark skin. that’s what gets people all crazy. my wife is french/welsh. her mother re-married, a chinese/russian. HIS mother re-married a mexican. and that mexican had the nerve to tell my then fiance that we shouldn’t get married. everythings good until it’s gets to blacks. then it’s sheet time.
