TatyannaSParticipantI work in retail and this irks me. Why does it seem that people from India are always trying to return things to get a better deal, re-use their coupons, or use coupons and disounts fraudulently? I’ve counted scientifically and kept tally, and it is way more often Indian people who are trying to barter or put one over on me to get money. Do they realize that ripping off the company takes money right from my paycheck?

ShainaSParticipantI am sorry that most of the people you encountered are Indian who return things. I am an INDIAN and I don’t do things like these. I really don’t have an answer as to why the Indian people who you are encountering do this all the time. I am sure they do not know that it takes money off your paycheck.

SamMemberInteresting observation. I think all FOB(fresh off the boat) would do this. It happens to be there are more Indian FOBs in USA because of our government’s H1B visa rule.

SamMemberAgree. Bartering not only hurts the business but it hurts employees, CEO, and most importantly it hurts countries like China. People there do hard work to make a product. We should appreciate it and buy in bulk and spend more so it helps others. I have seen some people try to barter with car sales man and smile when the car sales man agrees to lower the price. This is very shameful.

JerrySParticipantI think the comment that recent immigrants try to (I think you meant) bargain (not barter) has some truth to it. In many cultures, haggling is an accepted practice. In many situations here in the USA, it is accepted practice: cars, antiques, and so forth. Recently “savvy shopper” articles have been encouraged people to do this in department stores. As for the shady practices you mentioned, I can only guess that perhaps, in some cultures, putting one over on someone is considered a legitimate part of doing business. I believe there are a lot of folk tales here that are based upon such: think “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Curiously, a lot of US folk tales involve cheating the Devil in some kind of transaction.

MaraQParticipantBartering is part of the culture in India. In India, and many countries around the world, Market Price is the Fool’s Price (or tourists’!). It takes good haggling and a little manipulation to get the “real” price. It’s difficult to meet that mentality in the West, but usually as families acclimate, these tendencies simmer down. Even if they don’t, the best thing to do is be understanding and do what you need to do to keep your job.

DDParticipantIts annoying as shit. I work in insurance and you know a true Indian when you are talking to one because they will tell you their name 42 letter name and sometimes you are lucky to have them say their name then proceed to say it again alpha-phonetically. They complain to high hell about everything and always ask “Is that the best rate/price you can do/offer for me?” Its like trying to explain why an apple is an apple to them. Basically like hitting your head against a brick wall. Serious cultural difference because in the West, for the most part the price you see is the price you get. And if you don’t like it you go somewhere else.
