samanthaMemberthey wear them to indicate that they are married. some women that are not married wear different types of ‘dots’. sometimes they are shaped differently. i can’t really recall the proper name for the ‘dot’ but they’re not called dots.

Sarita19577ParticipantI’m actaully Indian. The red dot on the forehead was actually used as a sign of marriage, and still is sometimes. It is also meant to symbolize a third eye. This ‘red dot’ is called a bindi or tika. Nowadays, though, people just wear them for fashion most of the time…(at festivals, parties, and weddings). You can get all types of pretty ones at Indian markets…
