sezu28064ParticipantThat dot is a bindi. Hindi women wear it as a chakra symbol representing the third eye, the eye that sees into oneself.

Jo ManningParticipantThey indicate a woman is married. In some areas of India, married women also color the center parting of their hair. This is done with a powder. The dots—called bindi, I think—can be painted on (like nail polish) or can be actual stick-on dots. Usually red, but I remember seeing Indian Air stewardesses with dots in other colors to match their sarees.

C. PhillipsParticipantIt’s akin to how you see Catholics walking with ashes on their foreheads all day on ‘Ash Wednesday’. The people that you see with red dots are not necessarily Indian and not all Indian women wear it. It is a Hindu observance and identifier. Muslim and Christian Indian women do not wear the dot.

Jack21197ParticipantThe purpose of Asian indian women having a dot on their foreheads is to show the world that they are married. It is an ancient Hindu custom, and this alongwith other ornamnets that they wear, are meant to show marriagehood in the Indian milieu.

BethMemberI am not myself Indian, but my husband is, and I used to wonder the same thing myself. The short explaination is that there is no one single reason! In modern times, the dot (bindi) is considered decorative, and many women wear it as a fashion accessory. Previously (and even now in North India), it was the mark of a married Hindu woman. My grandmother-in-law tells me that the tradition started because it was believed that by wearing the bindi a woman would ward off the evil eye. I think that the real answer has been lost in antiquity…

annaParticipantThe dots are called ‘bindi’ and they denote that a woman is married. They come in different colors and mean different things, such as a woman who is widowed.

K26955ParticipantIn North India, women wear a red ‘dot’ called as ‘Bindi’ after they are married. It is a sign of being married. In other parts, the bindi is put on the fore-head after praying to God. It is considered as a sign of His blessings.

Apaarjeet ChopraParticipantTraditionally, it used to indicate whether a woman was married or not. But nowadays it has become a fashion accessory for modern indian women, married or not. There is a great variety of styles, not just a red dot, but red dots mean married women in rural areas.

RoshniParticipantIndian women have red/black dots on their forehead because it is a tradition that has been passed on, it is a way of showing that you have a husband. In today’s world, we use stylish and fancy designs, like a snake. It’s a kind of fashion now. Shania Twain has put a dot on her forehead in her song ‘From this moment on’. It also makes us different from the rest of the world because no other country uses it except the indians.

JulieParticipantWell the answer to this question is quite simple. It’s a fashion symbol for Indian women everywhere. They dont only put on red dots but also different colours such as yellow. They are sometimes stickers which are coloured in different patterns and shapes or a paint type substance. It was once used more for ritual and caste-related significances but now many women report that they are worn exclusively for fashion purposes

Kelly R.Memberhi. I can’t remember exactly how this goes, but you’ll see Indian women with black and red dots. Although i get them mixed up, I do believe that one color indicates that the woman is married, while the other color indicates that she is not. It’s like wearing a wedding ring.

Jane20957ParticipantIndian women wear the red dot when they are either married or have a future husband arranged. This is what I’ve been told & I think this correct.
