To Indians (from India) and Native Americans: Do you feel as frustrated as I do that because of Christopher Columbus’s incompetency, we always have to explain or modify our title of “Indian”? Native Americans are the real indigenous people and are not Indian, and I as an Indian with ancestors from India should not have to clarify that I am Asian Indian or “East” Indian in a eurocentrically conceptualized map. Does anyone else share these sentiments?

I know how you feel. I am part Native American, and I don’t like being called Indian because I am not from India. I also have two friends who are Indian (from India) and they are constantly asked what tribe they are from. It’s frustrating, but there is nothing we can do about it.

Why are you wasting time explaining where you are from? Just Say “I am from the earth planet, and you?” I am from a country where 90 percent of the citizens are of mixed origins … nobody needs to explain their race.

I used to be frustrated about it. But I guess it isn’t too hard for me to say, I’m a North American Treaty Indian. I sometimes say I’m Indian, but only to other Indians (native americans) It is as complicated as you want it to be I guess. I think people can usually tell I’m native american. Either that or they mistake me for hispanic, which is entirely another subject!
