Whats the corralation? This is precisely what I’m attempting to figure out. I’ve always wondered why these two seemlingly opposed cultures have historically gravitated toward one another within the scope of romantic relationships. It seems like this connection has simply always existed without ever being investigated. This is where I come in! In films such as Spike Lee’s, ‘Jungle Fever’, upon his friends’ learning he is dating a white woman, Wesley Snipes’ character is repeatedly asked, ‘Is she Jewish’?, as if ‘yes’ is the only sensical answer. Within literary circles, there have been a few instances of Jewish men dating African American women–specifically playwright Lorraine Hansberry(African American) married Robert Nemiroff (Jewish), as well as novelist Bernard Malamud’s (Jewish) numerous short stories written for his African American paramour. And this was all taking place in the 1950’s and 60’s! I find this absolutely fascinating stuff! Growing up Biracial in a largely Polish lower middle class community, I had no exposure to Jewish culture until college. As far as personal experiences go during and after college, I’ve been the focus of Jewish mens’ attention more than I would have ever expected. They love that I’m half African American. and its cool. really cool to date men from a vast array of cultures. I just want to understand Why. Why do Jewish men gravitate toward me and African American women in general? Is it a novelty issue, an issue of breaking down American sociological barriers, plain old attraction or an issue of thoughts running wild in my little neurotic brain? Any feedback would be appreciated. Take Care, Brit
