Why is it that a lot of younger people feel that hunting is wrong and immoral? If it’s something your parents and grandparents have been doing for generations, could it possibly be that wrong?

I am a 25-year-old female who has absolutely no problem with hunting. My fiancee has been hunting since he was 8, as has his whole family. It’s all right as long as there is a reason for the hunt (yes, they eat the animal and sell the hide). Our children will be taught to hunt responsibly from a very early age.

I do not feel hunting is wrong if it is done solely for the purpose of gaining food or for medical (disease) reasons (though it seems that too many people hunt to kill and maim, and that is a horrible thought). Lots of those people talk about killing animals as if it were a game, describing how the animal thrashed before death. And they always leave the carcass. I do not understand the reasoning behind this behavior.

Hunting over the years has had several purposes, most common being population control and bonding between a parent and child. Neither in my opinion are wrong. Without population control, animal herds would grow to a point where food supplies would be aggressively competitive and starvation and suffering would occur. For example, in the late 1990s, the deer population was considerably higher than previous years due to light numbers taken in the hunting season and light winter seasons. The last few years of the 1990s had some hard winters. The mixture of increased population numbers and hard winters caused the animals to forage low and into populated areas, and needless to say, about every mile down the highway (in western Montana) you could view a carcass of a deer resulting from being hit by cars, trucks and snow removers. This was very offensive to me, and I do hunt, simply because these animals were made to suffer an agonizing death. My second point is simply heritage. In today’s society, families lose themselves to making ends meet and striving for communicative paths that work. This is an avenue that has been on a proven path for years. If it weren’t, no one would hunt. In my circle, we hunt for meat, comaradarie and bonding. I look at it this way; If my father were a sports fanatic, then communcation about sports would be a means to tie communication and family values together. The bottom line for me is that hunting is a good thing on many levels, but it isn’t for everyone. If you have tried it and don’t like it, then I respect your choice. If you haven’t, then how can you comment on something you do not fully comprehend?

Just because your ancesters did it, that doesn’t make it right. Think about slavery. (I’m white.) I’m Jewish and observant Jews are forbidden to hunt. The rationale is that the less we are exposed to killing and bloodshed of any living beings, the more respect we’ll have of for all life including human life. As a result of this commandment, Jews have historically had a very very low rate of violent crime. Just Curious
