On the cover of The Los Angeles Times was a tragic picture of a Sudanese woman and her two starving children; one was an infant, the other a toddler. They were dying from famine and had only weeks to live. Famine is nothing new in this region and surely came as no surprise to the mother, who was herself emaciated. Why do people who live under these impossible conditions elect to have children when they know they will only suffer and die from starvation? As a white male from an upper-middle class background, I have made the decision to put off having children because I earn $30,000 per year as a waiter and am still in school.
