Do gay people feel they are the center of attention when they are in public, or are they treated as if they are straight?

Gay folks who don’t want to be singled out will dress pretty conservatively and won’t yell out obviously gay things in a crowd of strangers. But people who don’t mind being really flamboyant (say a gal in men’s clothes and a crew cut) don’t mind being stared at and probably don’t notice if people stare at them. The difficulty comes for people like me, who are mildly androgynous by nature and also shy. I think quiet and unassuming lesbians who stride along with their hands in their pockets may occasion a few stares. These stares aren’t really embarrassing even to shy lesbians. Most of us are secure enough within ourselves not to worry about a few stares from strangers on the street.

your question is a good one david in the fact that alot of gay people come from all walks of life and sexual orientation is only one part of peoples lives..because there are plenty of people who might look straight….act straight…even talk like thier straight….but aren’t ….there are alot of sterotypes and categories for gay people as well as straight….but the dont necessarily apply….so are we the center of attention….well to some in the christian right yeah we are.

You’ll always have people who like drawing attention to themselves, but for the most part, gays and lesbians would prefer being treated just as everyone else is.
