I would like to know if someone can explain why the Bosnians, Serbs, Croatians and Albanians hate each other so much. And to the Serbs, how is it possible to continue being a human being and looking at yourself in the mirror after torturing and murdering old people and children?

I wondered the same, but then I realized how powerful the brain is. Hate, indoctrination and labeling the tortured as “inhuman” means that the perpetrators of violence do not have to “live with themselves afterward.” The world is glad to be rid of these non-humans. It’s tragic. All we can do is treat (and demonstrate to) our children coherent ethical values.

I do not know a lot about the conflict between the Serbians and the Albanians, just basically what gets reported on the news in the United States, which we all know is never the whole story. You said that you hate the Serbians for the things they have done to the the Albanians for the last 200 years. I would like to know if it is the Serbian government that has commited these atrocities, or the Serbian people. You equated the situation to a 200-year Holocaust. During Hitler’s reign in Germany, Hitler and the German government were responsible for the atrocities of the Holocaust. Many German people are still extremely ashamed that their government did this. I would like to know if this is the case with many Serbians. Do they support their government’s actions, or do they oppose it but do not have a voice in what their government does?

Many of these conflicts are generations old based on very bloody clan/ethnic/religious conflicts. These feuds have become almost tradition amongst certain groups. In this situation hatred toward each other is almost reflexive because that is all they know. The US is fortunate in that because of our size immigrant groups normally in conflict can spread out and get away from each other. Generations pass without violence and people begin to heal and forget. European population centers are largely fixed so these groups are trapped together in a cycle of violence and hatred.

As far as the Serbs are concerned, it is more of a question of fear than it is of hate. Kosovo was occupied by the Muslims for 600 years until World War I and suffered great atrocities at the hands of the Albanians but regained control of Kosovo after WWI. During World War II the Albanians regained control and many Serbs fled. Of those who remained, 10,000 innocent civilians were slaughtered. In croatia, the government sided with the nazis, took over bosnia, established death camps (jasenovac was one) and proceeded to exterminate 700,000 serbs, jews and gypsies. The Bosnian muslims also sided with the nazis and committed atrocities and terror against the serbs. Before yugoslavia splintered apart in the 1990’s the serbs in croatia and bosnia were being terrorized, beaten and even killed. All of thee serbs had relatives that suffered the genocides of WW2 and saw a repeat of that coming on and were determined not to let that happen again so they took up arms and fought. As for why everyone hates the serbs, there is no valid reason, you have to ask them. As far as the torture and murder of old people and children are concerned, that was indeed a terrible thing and war criminals should be brought to justice, however, all sides committed those atrocities and not just the serbs. Also these types of atrocities happen in every war from the beginning of time to the present day and is not a uniquely balkan phenomena like the media would have you believe. I find it racist, abhorrent and insulting that you indict the entire serbian peoples for the war crimes of a few. I also find it extremely hypocritical as well. I see you are from Spain. Spanish history is much bloodier than Serbian history. What the spanish conquistadors did to the native american populations of central and south america pales in comparison to what the serbs did in the 1990’s. The wholesale slaughter, subjugation and eventual cultural genocide of the peaceful native peoples of central and south america at the hands of the Spanish is cause for great shame for the Spanish nation and peoples. My question to you is how is it possible to continue being a human being and looking yourself in the mirror after your Spanish nation committed such unprovoked heinous, barbaric genocide against women, children and the elderly?

In regards to people hating eachother in the Balkans… it is primarily the older folks of these countries (Croatia, Albania, Boznia and Hercegovina, Serbia) that create this hate and promote it. My granparents (i’m croatian and so are they, as is all of my family) have an extreme hate for serbians. My parents and i do not. We have family friends that are serbian and other family friends that are boznian and we dont hate them. Its simple really, as long as you dont get politics involved in the dicussion you’re safe. The kids at my school were astonished about how this could be…well it just is. Thx alot…peace to EVERYPNE in the balkans.
