Augustine23654ParticipantHow did this trend get started of writing in ink on the palm of one’s free hand when there is the need to write something down in a hurry? Very rarely is there absolutely nothing around to write on, even if it’s a napkin, matchbook cover or piece of scrap paper. I never used to see people doing this, and quite frankly, I think it’s kind of gross.

CherylMemberI have that ‘gross’ habit you are asking about. For me it is simply because if I write on a small piece of something, as you suggested, I will lose it. I will not loose my hand, so I will not lose the message. It generally takes a good scrubbing to get it off, so I make sure it is in a more permanent location before I attempt to scrub it off.

Danielle27241ParticipantScraps of paper are easy to lose. I’ve never seen anyone forget or lose his hand somewhere.

jessica30650Participanti dont feel that this practice is gross at all as long as the person doing it has the intention to remove it once it has been transferred to a more apropriate place. in fact i think that this is a practical thing to do because when one is in a hurry, they might very well forget writing on something as insignificant as a matchbook and/ or napkin. the practice of writing on your hand simply insures that the person wont be able to quickly forget or lose what it was they wote.

BethMemberBack in the day, when the bars were closing, I would have a guy write his phone number on my hand. It required close personal contact, they had to hold my hand while writing and when I woke up from my drunken stupor, the number was still there. I had many dates because I still had their number in the morning. Have you ever tried to keep track of a phone number that was written on a napkin? I lost touch with a great guy because I washed my jeans with the napkin in the pocket.

CJMemberI wrote notes on the back of my hand all through school and college. As the other responders said, it’s impossible to lose your hand. And though I agree that it does look messy, it worked better than any of the organizers or notepads I wasted money on ever did. Now that I’ve graduated and am out in the corporate world, I don’t write notes on the back of my hand during the day…and consequently, I forget things.
