I was working in New York City with some nurses from Trinidad and Haiti. I was assigned care of a woman who was to deliver a dead fetus. At delivery these nurses came in and made me place the fetus on the floor. I placed it on a cloth on the floor momentarily, then I removed him for burial. Why did they do make me do that?

My wife is Mexican of Native American (Aztec) descent. When her mother passed away in Mexico some years ago, some of the neighbors came in and insisted that my wife’s sister place her mother’s body on the floor. My sister-in-law didn’t want to do it but while she was out making funeral arrangements, the neighbor ladies took the body and placed it on the floor. The explanation for this was that if the body was not in contact with the earth, the spirit would be restless and wander about. I don’t know if this belief is native to the Americas or was brought here by Europeans. The history of the spread of Catholocism is full of examples of the church absorbing, or at least tolerating, such local customs and beliefs.

I don’t know for sure, but I’d bet it has something to do with a religion called Vodun. I believe it is a mix of Catholicism and old African religions. After the natives were wiped out Haiti was a land of French Catholics and African slaves. You can probabkly find an answer on the net.
