Patricia L.ParticipantI am an occupational therapy student working on a case about a woman who belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church. Can anyone give me information about the church’s position on rape and battery, as well as on personal cleanliness and refusal to get rid of waste?

SymeonParticipantThe Orthodox Church, of course, views rape and battery as wrong. In essence, the Holy Fathers teach us that everything that ‘happens’ to us is an opportunity to grow closer to Christ. Any traumatic event like that, however, requires careful, intense, pastoral care. Much depends on the spiritual state of the person. A priest should certainly be involved in that person’s rehabilitation, as well as a loving, prayerful community. As for personal cleanliness, the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and should be treated as such. Waste should certainly be disposed of. I’m not sure what you mean by that. These sound like symptoms of spiritual sickness that can come from such a tragic event. The Holy Fathers teach us that despair is the worst state that one can fall into. That’s why she needs the support of her priest and community. Perhaps most of all, she needs prayer.
