StilBilParticipantActually ever generation wants to claim a social trend or fad to be of their own origination. The fact is that Gold teeth caps was prevalent in the south back in the 50’s and 60’s. They would have cutouts of a star or 1/4 moon to reveal the tooth behind as another option. It was in their eyes a fashion statement that only the hippest people of the street and nightlife would wear. Blacks weren’t necessarily defined in anything but so-called lower class back then, so that’s not even relevant. They just wanted to be different just like any other generation who never studies history. Technology and humans are very separate entities, so they saying ‘ That there is nothing new under the Sun’ only applies to humans, not technology! When U take the time to study history, people tend to reinvent more so that they truly create. That’s why bigotry, hatred, discrimination, etc will be around for a long time to come. All cultures since we live in America find a way to get noticed in this drama queen society. Gold teeth caps, piercing body parts, tattoos, loud multi-color hair, long curly fingernails, mohawks, shaved heads, trashy fashion, colored contacts and what ever the next one is. They all are the same, usually people who have a great desire to be noticed by the other what ever billion people on the planet!

j-hughesParticipantblacks do this cuz gold is a precious metal and they think by having it in their mouths it makes them feel like they are coming up on the white man. just the same as blacks want cadillacs or other big cars with gaudy ass wheels that are obviously too big. its them showing the white man that they have over come.

AsiaParticipantThanks to my Grandmother, I know that a few decades ago, it might have been just part of your dental work (caps, or a tooth replacement)! In New Orleans, you’ll find Black and White people with gold teeth who just like the look. But in regards to my own culture, I know that Black people have loved wearing precious metals since our beginnings in Africa, and find ourselves attractive in those adornments no matter how different it may seem to another culture. Bling bling didn’t start yesterday – look at pictures of Africans in traditional dress, and they sport plenty of beautiful jewelry, piercings, etc. It’s in the blood to decorate ourselves.

responderParticipantWe are just as bewildered by this phenomenon of gold teeth in the northern states. We can always recognize people from the south by their smile (bling bling!)You just don’t see that up here amongst blacks or any other race. We think it’s a southern thing. I cannot recall any blacks I know up north going to the dentist, and scheduling an appointment to have gold teeth! I even go so far as to have white fillings put in my cavities! I don’t want silver, gold, diamonds or my initials in my teeth. I wear my jewelry on my arm and neck thank you very much.

joe30631Participantactually it is not a deep south thing. i was born and raised in new orleans. and yes it is about 80-85% black here. the gold teeth thing basically was started in the early early 90’s. and it was not only local rappers. its local black people period. i have many friends who have slugs in their mouths. which is another way of sayin they got gold teeth. all the blacks from mississippi, texas, alabama, florida, georgia. . are merely copycats. and are following the trend that was started in the real south, new orleans. started by the local 504 area black males. and brough to the national scene by master p and no limit records. followed by cash money records.

JaneMemberI also think it’s a fashion statement which, along with jeans whose waist is worn around the upper-thigh, Ugg boots, flared-bottomed capri pants, and mullets is an asthetic I just don’t get. But that’s me. It is a trend which, in my recent experience, has been favored by black and hispanic youth, some white kids, or just anyone heavily into the rap scene. However, it is a look which apparently (maybe someone with more knowledge of it can respond) has been popular in traditional Latino cultures for a very long time. (Didn’t the Mayans practice something like this?)And today many Latinos wear them. My next-door neighbors, who are Mexican, put silver caps on their four-year old’s teeth. They own their house in our lower-middle class neighborhood, the husband speaks decent English, the wife, none. The husband has gold canines, I’ve only gotten a shy close-lipped smile from the wife, so I don’t know about her. They are very quiet and friendly and maintain their home and yard well. They listen to Tejano and Ranchera, not rap. I have met many Salvadorans who have gold teeth, construction workers, independent used car dealers, and I did business with an Ecuadoran woman who favored the very colorful traditional dress, long braids and gold teeth. Also, now that I think of it, when I was a kid I used to notice a lot of older conservatively dressed black folks with gold teeth, and at the time I didn’t think anything of it, I just assumed that maybe they had had a bad tooth and it was a decorative way of fixing it. Since I don’t have any gold teeth I probably shouldn’t have responded and I am unable to answer any ‘why’s’ but I wanted to throw in my observations in the hope of encouraging more responses from any of the dentally adorned folks out there.

JaneMemberBrenda asked a straightforward unassuming question. The only statement she made was that she did not personally find a particular fashion attractive. How you could read a fear of robbery into her innocent question about tooth decoration says, I think, more about you than about her. I only write this because I am excited about this forum and the open discourse it could inspire. The first part of your answer is perfectly in keeping with this spirit of openness; your last statement, however, is not.

Paul-A28920ParticipantNew Orleans is part of the ‘Old Southwest.’ Wearing gold teeth is a regional preference among African-Americans living in Eastern Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. I am a Caucasian living in California, and African-Americans raised in Los Angeles typically don’t wear gold teeth. I can spot a recent arrival or visitor by this fashion.
