R-PParticipantThe verse John 3:13 in the Bible indicates that only one person has ever entered heaven. Not being of the Christian faith, this stupefies me. What does it mean?

ShashikantParticipantI am amazed to find, even today, millions who would do ‘good things’ and ‘not commit sin’ to enter heaven. Lets see. People do bad things because they want something that they don’t get. Desire is the root of all evil. What is the point of thirsting after heaven? Trying to get to heaven deperately is as bad as trying to get into a brothel. I am not Christian but I have studies the Bible and the fundamental fact that stands out it is that it is your own craving that you have to overcome. If, after all that self-abnegation, you end up in a place where you can enjoy the same wine women and song, why not enjoy it here itself? Its high time humans stopped ‘wishing’ for a world beyond where all is pleasure and no pain. God is beyond both pleasure and pain and is limitless. It is quite stupid to ascribe human qualities to God an lower Him. Who are we to decide what His divine nature is? The second point is simple. The Bible is written by Humans as with every other religious book. God does not need words to reveal His nature to us. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa used to say ‘The scriptures are a mixture of sand and sugar. We must be like ants. Take the sugar and leave the sand.’ So use your descrimination and be sure that not everything written in these sacred texts is to be followed literally. Follow only that which gives you Freedom, Strength, Purity. Reject all suggestion of slavery, weakness and filth. If God gave you a Bible, he also gave you a brain to understand it properly. So throw away all this nonsense about heaven and earth and spend your life in the service of God in man. BTW, you should read ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ by Paramahamsa Yogananda and Swami Vivekananda’s ‘Karma Yoga’.

Melanie-HoseyParticipantMy Background: Christian school K-12 and a BA of Biblical studies. I agree with R.P. of Ft. Wayne, IN but would like to add another possible explanation. Nicodemus was a religious leader whose very title of Pharisee meant that he strictly adhered to both the written and oral law given through Moses. He was notably confused at the idea of getting to heaven by any other way than good works. Christ was attempting to explain to him that it was only faith in Christ’s payment for his sin that could actually get him there. (John 3:15-17) Many people are still confused by this concept, but Romans 2:8-9 is very clear on the subject ‘For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.’
